This week, Amazon Australia have announced a significant milestone towards the company’s sustainability goals by eliminating single-use plastic delivery bags and envelopes with the launch of 100% recyclable packaging. This change applies to both Amazon Australia and third-party sellers using Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA), ensuring that customers receive their orders in recyclable packaging that can be easily disposed of in household recycling bins.

Janet Menzies, Country Manager of Amazon Australia, highlighted the importance of this transition, stating “Moving to 100% recyclable delivery packaging in Australia is a major milestone for us. This project has been almost two years in the making, following a rigorous process of product development and testing to ensure the paper envelopes can also withstand the delivery process and customer orders arrive safely.”

According to Chris Foley, CEO of the Australian Packaging Covenant, “Australians generate 1.2 million tonnes of plastic packaging each year, with single-use plastics posing a significant challenge.” He praised Amazon’s efforts, noting that “Amazon’s decision to replace plastic delivery bags with recyclable alternatives highlights their strong commitment to more circular packaging practices. This initiative showcases their ability to pivot towards solutions that are not only better for the environment but also aligned with the growing demand for more readily recyclable materials.”

Automated Paper Packaging Machines

To further its commitment, Amazon Australia has invested in three automated paper packaging machines. These machines pack single products in paper bags made on demand, significantly reducing packaging weight and waste. The paper bags, adorned with uniquely Australian artwork, are up to 77% lighter than plastic padded envelopes.

Ships in Product Packaging Program

Amazon’s ‘Ships in Product Packaging’ program allows for the delivery of essential items like nappies and toilet rolls without additional packaging. This program reduces material use and delivery weight by shipping items in their original manufacturer packaging.

Broader Sustainability Efforts

Amazon’s packaging innovations are part of its broader commitment to sustainability. The company co-founded The Climate Pledge, aiming for net-zero carbon operations by 2040. Amazon has already achieved its goal of matching 100% of its global electricity use with renewable energy by 2030, seven years ahead of schedule. In Australia, Amazon’s renewable energy projects, including solar and wind farms, are set to generate enough energy to power over 175,000 homes.
