Council to apply for TAC funding for new crossings near Torquay College

The Surf Coast Shire Council will apply for Transport Accident Commission (TAC) funding for pedestrian and cyclist safety improvements to the Grossmans Road/Eton Road school precinct in Torquay.

The safety works will help improve pedestrian crossing movements at the Eton Road and Grossmans Road roundabout and just south of Torquay College on Eton Road. Works would also include lighting upgrades and safety improvements to the Eton Road roundabout itself.

Council will apply for $100,000 from the TAC to complete this upgrade, with $124,000 to be provided by Council should the grant application be successful.

“With around 900 students attending Torquay College, it’s a busy place at drop off and pick up times, with traffic banked up and just one school crossing on Grossmans Road,” Surf Coast Cr Mike Bodsworth said.

“School families have been calling for safety upgrades, so we’re applying to the TAC to share the costs of these works, which will make a big difference for many.”

“It’s certainly a much-needed upgrade that will make getting to and from school safer for everyone.”

Council will also apply for $30,000 from the TAC to complete an analysis of 10 high risk pedestrian crossing locations across the shire, with Council to contribute $6,000 should the grant be successful.

This would include analysing crash data, pedestrian volume data and feedback collated as part of the Road Safety Strategy to identify 10 most critical road crossing improvements and develop concept plans for upgrades.

“This analysis will help Council secure funding for similar infrastructure-based grants in the future,” Cr Bodsworth said.
