Surf Coast Shire Council will continue to work with Surf Coast Little Athletics Club to help it find short and long-term venues.

Council resolved at its 26 July meeting to formally respond to a petition from the club which sought a dedicated athletics track, area for field events and amenities.

The club submitted its petition signed by 192 people to Council in April 2022 after having formed in 2021 and completed its first season during last summer at Torquay College with 105 members.

Council officers will continue to liaise with club leaders on potential short to medium-term venue options. The priority of a long-term option will need to be assessed alongside several other projects as part of a Social Infrastructure Plan due for completion later this year.

“We congratulate leaders for having established the club and hit the ground running, providing healthy activity and social connections for more than 100 young people, and we can expect their ranks to grow in coming seasons,” Cr Liz Pattison said.

“We look forward to seeing the club find a venue and have assisted with preliminary assessment of potential future sites in Torquay and surrounding areas, identifying Torquay College, Quay Reserve and Connewarre Reserve as short to medium-term options.

“Of course there are many influencing factors to consider, including existing use of spaces for other sports and activities. Council will continue supporting the club working through these and any other possibilities.

“Promoting recreational activities and healthy lifestyles are key objectives in our Council Plan. Little Aths has a great track record in helping to shape healthy, active lives, and establishing of a dedicated athletics facility would also bring benefits for our wider community.”
