GLOBAL CITIZEN LIVE

It was the 24 hour global festival the featured the likes of Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Lopez, Cyndi Lauper, Elton John and even the Duke and Duchess of Sussex came out of hibernation for the cause.

The purpose of the event was to get the world to unite, defend the planet and defeat poverty. Hailing from 6 continents, the broadcast featured  artists, celebrities and world leaders. Over 60 artists performed in the festival with tens of thousands of people attending concerts around the world and millions upon millions tuning into the live broadcast.

Unlike events of the past where organisers aim to raise cash, this event was all about raising issues and asking world leaders, governments, major corporations, and philanthropists to find solutions and work together to defend the planet and defeat property on a global scale.

It called on the government’s to plant one billion trees, deliver one billion vaccines to the poorest countries and donate meals for 41 million people living on the brink of famine.

The event kicked off on Saturday in Paris where Elton John performed in front of the Eiffel Tower it then cruised the world taking in Lagos, London, Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, and Sydney.

Many artists put their hands up to take part in the concert, but given time constraints, many had to be refused.  Some unable to perform live due to COVID19 restrictions, made pre-recorded performances, these included Green Day, Kylie Minogue and Andrea Bocelli.

USAID Administrator Samantha Power, announced during the broadcast that the US would contribute more than $295 million towards famine, confronting gender based violence, and the urgent humanitarian needs of those with Covid 19 symptoms.

For Founder and CEO Hugh Evans, the Event was a huge success, with promises of over 1.1 billion dollars to support hunger education and COVID 19 relief. They also got a commitment of 157 million trees to be planted universally and also the French President said he would double their commitment for COVID 19 vaccinations to the poorer countries

Global Citizen Live is part of Global Citizen’s 2021 global campaign, a recovery plan for the world. The Recovery Plan focuses on five key objectives: ending COVID-19 for all, ending the hunger crisis, resuming learning for all, protecting the planet, and advancing equity for all.
