POINT LONSDALE FORESHORE SEAWALL REVAMP NEARLY COMPLETED

The Borough of Queenscliffe and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning during a routine inspection noticed storm damage which required urgent repair to a section of the seawall on the Point Lonsdale Foreshore.

The section in question, is about 8o metres long, and over the years has been heavily impacted by a number of severe storms.  Storms of this magnitude create large waves crashing against the wall, with substantial force which in turn, can loosen the mortar which holds the wall together.  In some instances, It can cause it to erode completely.  Whilst the damage isn’t proposing any immediate threat to visitors safety, the Council will be reconstructing and renewing the effected area, to ensure it remains safe for public use.

Queenscliff Mayor Ross Ebbels thanked residents for their patience while the works are completed.

“The safety of our community is Council’s highest priority, and I want to thank residents for their patience while we complete urgent repair works on the Point Lonsdale sea wall,” Cr Ebbels said.

Work is expected to start in early October and it will take quite a few months to complete.  In order to minimise disruption, and still allow pedestrians to continue access to the beach, the reconstruction of the wall will be completed in small sections.  Visitors to the foreshore area are requested to obey any signage or direction from workers on site, and avoid areas closed to public access.

Without funding from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. the repairs would have been impossible to complete.
