In a world increasingly aware of the importance of sustainable living, Sonja and Jim Brodie’s The Circular Garden: a Manifesto for Sustainable Growing is an essential handbook for gardeners looking to cultivate abundance while caring for the planet.

Drawing on over a decade of hands-on experience cultivating vegetables in a challenging environment (windswept south-west Scotland), husband and wife authors provide expert advice on natural pest control, habitat creation, soil regeneration and more in their new book, The Circular Garden: a Manifesto for Sustainable Growing.

Suitable for anyone from novice gardeners to seasoned growers, this book combines inspirational ideas and sustainable resources with the authors’ no-nonsense, experience-based approach, and uses pragmatic, tested methods that work in real-world conditions.

Whether you’re growing in an urban garden, allotment, smallholding or community garden, this book is a must-have for those who want to maximise their yields while minimising their environmental impact.

Synopsis:

The Circular Garden: a Manifesto for Sustainable Growing covers subjects including natural pest control, habitat creation, building soil from garden waste, getting good yields year round, seed saving and preserving your bounty. It reveals lessons learnt over a decade of successful vegetable growing on a challenging site.

An inspirational read for everyone, this concise and down-to-earth handbook is packed with practical, budget-friendly strategies for growing food sustainably.

The book has been well received by gardeners and the media alike:

Gardener, writer and TV presenter Alys Fowler said “It makes sense to choose a growing guide from those at the top of their game. The Brodies really know what they are doing and this gentle and generous book will have you gardening in the kindest of manner. It’s full of such wisdom and is truly inspiring.”

The authors say:

“Our approach could be called ‘life gardening’. It transforms a productive garden into a rich and resilient hub of life, without complicated methods or costly inputs. Tried and tested in a rugged, windy Scottish coastal location: it will work anywhere!”

About the authors:

With backgrounds in biological research and journalism respectively, Jim and Sonja Brodie now live on a 1.5-acre smallholding in a windswept corner of Galloway, south-west Scotland, where they grow all their own veg, fruit and herbs.

When they started their garden from scratch eleven years ago, their ambition was to see what all and how much of their diet they could grow themselves. There wasn’t much precedent for what they were doing – all the gardening guides were written a lot further south. To their surprise, nearly everything they tried grew, and now they cultivate around 35 types of fruit, some 50 vegetables and a plethora of herbs. Three years in, they brought home their last store-bought vegetable. Since orchard production ramped up in year five, they’ve eaten exclusively home-grown fruit all year round.

Jim and Sonja have documented much of their food growing on their popular Instagram account @reasonablygoodlife (>40K followers).
