For the past 10 years WA’s The Human Highway have been selling out their Neil Young show at premier metro and regional venues including Freo.Social, The Duke of George and the Quarry Amphitheatre.
In 2025, they celebrate the 80th birthday of one of the most influential and idiosyncratic artists of our time with a spring tour that takes them to Victoria for the first time, along with several shows in WA.
Fronted by long time lovers of Neil Young, renowned musicians David Hyams and Rose Parker, the 6-piece lineup is equally adept at capturing the essence of Young’s two primary styles: from gentle folk and country to the electric guitar driven rock of ‘Crazy Horse’. Audiences have been stunned at their renditions of pieces from the ‘Harvest’ album originally recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, such as ‘A Man needs a Maid’.
This is undoubtedly not just another tribute show, but a rare chance to hear the great man’s music reproduced with authenticity and passion, while allowing the virtuosity of some of Australia’s finest musicians to shine.
Featuring songs from the beginning of Young’s solo career in the late ’60s through to the 21st century, The Human Highway dig deep into Neil’s eclectic sweep of over 1000 songs, which include material from early bands Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
Vocalist and guitarist David Hyams said, “I’m sure everyone likes to think they are not your average tribute show, but The Human Highway can back up that claim in the way we use our instrumental talent for improvisation.
“You won’t find a note for note reproduction, especially in the solos for songs such as ‘Like A Hurricane’, ‘Cortez the Killer’, and ‘Southern Man’. We think that would be un-Neil like! So every show is different in that way, though we do work on being very authentic in the arrangements and instrumentation and most importantly, in capturing the essence of the music. Aside from the expected classics, we also like to surprise with a few of the lesser- known numbers, which the hard-core Neil Young fans really appreciate.”
