New BESS project set to deliver more reliable power for 150,000 Queenslanders

Nectr’s sister company, Hanwha Energy Australia, has achieved a major milestone for its greenfield Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) located in Tangkam, Queensland, with grid connection approval from Powerlink Queensland now enabling the project to advance toward construction and integration with Queensland’s transmission network.

Located approximately 150 km west of Brisbane, the 100 MW / 200 MWh (2-hour) BESS will connect to the grid via an existing Powerlink substation and integrate seamlessly with Queensland’s transmission network.

Once operational, the Tangkam BESS will store surplus daytime solar energy for release during evening demand peaks, providing reliable energy support for an estimated 150,000 households. The system is engineered to provide critical grid services, including system inertia traditionally supplied by coal and gas assets, helping Queensland strengthen grid resilience and move closer to its 100% renewable energy goal.

The Tangkam BESS marks another step in Hanwha Energy Australia’s mission to deliver high-impact, future-ready energy infrastructure across the country.

“Battery energy storage systems such as the Tangkam BESS project are the way forward for delivering a cleaner, greener and more reliable energy future for Australians,” said Alberto Costa, General Manager at Hanwha Energy Australia.

“By storing energy and making electricity available when communities need it most, this BESS will help stabilise the grid, support the growth of renewable energy, and ensure Queenslanders benefit from a more sustainable and resilient power system. We’re excited to be taking the lead in advancing innovative energy solutions to benefit Australian energy users now and into the future.”

As the retail arm of Hanwha Energy Australia, Nectr understands the energy pressures faced by Australian energy consumers and the need for new energy solutions to improve energy reliability and reduce costs for consumers.

“At Nectr, we’re proud to be part of the Hanwha Group, championing cleaner, greener energy solutions for Australians,” said Hayden Barry, Managing Director at Nectr. “The new Tangkam BESS project represents strong progress toward a more resilient and renewable-powered future and new opportunities to support cleaner, greener, more affordable energy for consumers.”

Nectr was recently awarded four prestigious Mozo Experts Choice Awards 2026 in the categories of: Small Business Electricity – NSW (Nectr Business Buzz), Small Business Electricity – QLD (Nectr Business Buzz), Electricity – NSW (Nectr Home Buzz), and Green Electricity – ACT (Nectr Green Power).
