Federal Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Josh Wilson visits Kmart DC
Kmart Group has hit a major milestone on its sustainability journey, announcing today at the Kmart Distribution Centre in Jandakot with the Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, the Hon. Josh Wilson MP, that it has achieved its 100% renewable electricity target across its operations, as part of its commitment to achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
This means that Kmart’s total electricity use across 448 stores, 10 distribution centres, and 12 national and international offices across Kmart and Target is covered by onsite renewables or offsite agreements from renewable sources. This includes onsite solar generation and power purchase agreements linked to generation assets including New England Solar Farm (NSW), Numurkah Solar Farm (VIC), Tailem Bend 2 Solar Farm (SA), and Western Downs Green Power Hub (QLD). Where energy is supplied by our landlords Kmart Group is surrendering unbundled large-scale generation certificates to match the energy consumed.
According to Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer Alexandra Staley this important milestone reflects Kmart Group’s efforts to reduce, where it can, the environmental impacts of its operations.

Kmart Group’s milestone directly supports the Federal Government’s clean energy transition, focused on accelerating Australia’s shift to renewables and reducing emissions.
Since making its 100% renewable electricity commitment, Kmart Group has also achieved a 4.9% reduction in total electricity use since 2021, while adding ten stores across Australia and New Zealand1.
Kmart has achieved its energy reduction through measures including efficient lighting design and energy efficient heating / cooling systems in stores.
Kmart Group’s 100% renewable electricity marks a milestone in the company’s journey towards net-zero (Scope 1 & 2 emissions) by 2030 and reflects the company’s broader sustainability efforts to minimise environmental impact and contribute positively to the communities in which it operates.
Background
• Kmart has matched its electricity consumption with renewable electricity through power purchase agreements, self-generated electricity and electricity retailer arrangements.
• Where possible, Kmart Group is generating renewable electricity onsite through solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, including three new installations in FY2025.
• Where onsite generation isn’t feasible, Kmart Group has secured offsite power purchase agreements with large-scale renewable assets including New England Solar Farm (NSW), Numurkah Solar Farm (VIC), Tailem Bend 2 Solar Farm (SA), and Western Downs Green Power Hub (QLD).
