CITY OF GREATER GEELONG NEW ROAD MEASURES TO BE EXPLORED

Local residents will be encouraged to provide their feedback on proposed new traffic calming measures for Tivoli Drive, Curlewis.

Council last night noted an independent traffic assessment and report into the north-south road, which helps connect Portarlington Road to the Bayview Central shopping area.

It resolved to further explore additional traffic calming measures, including the potential to partially close Tivoli Drive, as interim solutions until the road is duplicated.

Following its opening to through traffic in August 2020, some concerns have been raised about the volume and speed of traffic, noise, road width and lack of knowledge about the interim design of Tivoli Drive.

In response, the City has implemented traffic calming measures such as speed humps, parking restrictions, splitter islands and improved signage, at a total cost of about $98,000.

Speed trailers were also placed on the road in May, which have helped improve compliance with speed limits.

Following a resolution from Council, a report considering alternative options to the operation and modification of Tivoli Drive has been prepared.

Independent analyst Ratio Consultants has recommended a holistic management approach, which require input from Council, motorists, Regional Roads Victoria and Victoria Police.

A community information session will be held at a later date for residents to discuss the report.

Cr Jim Mason, of Bellarine Ward, said as these traffic calming concepts are developed, the community would be asked to provide input into the potential options.

“We’re keen to get further public feedback on how to best manage traffic in the area, and the most suitable additional immediate temporary measures,” Cr Mason said.

“I’m pleased a specialist acoustic assessment will be completed shortly following community feedback on vehicle noise.

“We want to ensure our initiatives are well directed and provide the best outcomes, ahead of the duplication of the road.”

The projected timeline for the second stage of the Jetty Road Urban Growth Planindicates a duplicated Tivoli Drive and Greenvale Drive would open in 2025-2026.

Due to the timing, Council has resolved to also investigate the feasibility of a partial road closure.

Following the investigation, further community engagement will be held on the potential initiative.
