Radhika Mayani, Founder of Left-handesign®

Background

Radhika Mayani is the Founder of Left-handesign®, a sustainable stationery brand based in Singapore and now excited to bring it to Australia. Her journey towards sustainability began when she worked in the hospitality industry in Singapore and witnessed the significant wastage happening in hotels. This experience triggered her determination to find a solution to the waste problem and promote sustainability.

To provide insights into Eco Stationery, Tim Langdon, publisher of Eco Voice, had the pleasure of facilitating a Q & A with Radhika Mayani, Founder of Left-Handesign.

Q1. What is your motivation for founding a company with a focus on Eco Stationery?

My motivation stems from witnessing substantial wastage in the hospitality industry and a desire to create a meaningful impact. Left-handesign was born out of a passion for nature and stationery, with a vision to intertwine sustainability and everyday products. It’s about offering an eco-friendly alternative in a market dominated by single-use items and driving a shift towards conscious consumerism.

Q2. What is plantable packaging?

Plantable packaging, a cornerstone of Left-handesign’s product line, is an innovative concept where the packaging material is embedded with seeds. Once the product’s life cycle ends, the packaging can be planted, giving it a new life as it grows into plants or flowers. This approach not only reduces waste but also adds value to the end product, contributing positively to the environment.

Q3. Are your customers increasingly interested in sustainability?

Absolutely. We’ve seen a growing interest in sustainability among our customers. There’s an emerging consciousness about the impact of consumer choices on the environment. Our customers appreciate the dual benefit of high-quality stationery that also supports ecological well-being, indicating a shift towards more environmentally responsible purchasing behaviours.

Q4. What are some of the highlights as a Founder of a sustainability-focused business?

One of the main highlights is witnessing the positive reception of our ‘BĪJ’ collections and the impact it’s making. Being recognized with awards such as the ‘Entrepreneur 100 Award’ and the ‘Top 50 Small Business Leaders 2023’ in Australia reflects the growing acceptance and appreciation of sustainable businesses. Another highlight is the opportunity to educate and inspire individuals and organizations to adopt more eco-friendly practices.

Q5. What is the best way to get more people to embrace sustainability?

Education and awareness are key. It’s about showing the tangible benefits of sustainable living, not just for the environment but also for personal well-being. Making sustainability accessible and convenient is crucial. When people see that eco-friendly products can be stylish, functional, and affordable, they’re more likely to make the switch. Also, sharing success stories and the positive impact of sustainable practices can inspire more people to embrace this lifestyle.

Q6. How can publications, such as Eco Voice, play their part in promoting sustainability?

Publications like Eco Voice are instrumental in promoting sustainability. They can amplify the voices of eco-conscious businesses and leaders, share success stories, and provide educational content that demystifies sustainability. By highlighting innovative solutions and trends in the sustainable market, these publications can influence public perception and encourage more people and businesses to adopt greener practices. Their role in creating a platform for discussion and awareness is invaluable in building a more sustainable future.
