OceanEarth Foundation is delighted to announce that our inaugural Ocean Youth Summit will take place on 11-12th April, 2024, at the Australian National Maritime Museum. This immersive two-day event is poised to bring together youth advocates from across the country to champion the cause of ocean conservation.

The Ocean Youth Summit, being held during Youth Week, represents a unique collaboration among key ocean stakeholders.  It aims to provide an inspirational platform for youth to unite their energy, knowledge, and action towards a brighter future for our planet’s most precious treasure—the ocean.

“The Summit presents a terrific opportunity for young Australians to come together with ocean experts, be inspired and start co-creating the future they want to see for our ocean – and I am thrilled to be part of it,” said Lottie Dalziel, 2023 NSW Young Australian of the Year and Founder of Banish.

“As the largest habitat on Earth, covering over 70% of the planet’s surface, the ocean plays a vital role in sustaining life, regulating climate, and supporting countless species. However, it faces unprecedented challenges such as plastic pollution, coral reef bleaching, and biodiversity loss,” explained Claudette Rechtorik, Ocean Youth Founder and Program Manager.

“The Ocean Youth Summit is a testament to the belief that our youth are important stakeholders in driving meaningful and transformational change.”

Over two days, the Summit will engage and empower youth aged 12-24 through discussions, interactive activities, and networking opportunities. Day one will feature youth-led stories and solutions for ocean health, including plenary and panel discussions to inspire positive action. The day will culminate in a networking event focused on showcasing opportunities in the emerging clean tech, environmental, and blue economies.

The second day will focus on creating youth-led solutions for restoring ocean health, with interactive sessions designed to foster problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Through the “kids-teaching-kids” methodology, participants will explore challenges facing our oceans and learn to develop innovative solutions.

“The impact of the Summit is expected to be far-reaching, with over 400 youth attending over two days, with many others accessing it virtually. Empowering our next generation of innovators and leaders, it will build their capacity to make informed and sustainable choices for a healthier ocean, amplify their voice and actions, and elevate the importance of ocean in education.”

The summit will also be showcasing new initiatives from organisations in the emerging blue, green, and clean economies while creating career pathways for youth.
