Time to recognise our Local Legends

Know an unsung hero or organisation helping our community to thrive?

Now is the time to celebrate their achievements and contributions by nominating them as a Surf Coast Shire Council Local Legend.

The Local Legends program recognises people or groups of all ages who share positive impact by:

  • Helping others and strengthening our community
  • Caring for our environment
  • Improving inclusion and celebrating diversity, and
  • Promoting healthy eating and active living

“These community champions are all around us, making a positive difference, and it is wonderful to celebrate their contributions,” Deputy Mayor Liz Pattison said.

“Our Local Legends program is non-competitive and nominees can be any age. We encourage people to put forward nominations so we can share recognition where it is truly due.”

Nominations for the 2022-23 program are open until 30 October.

Local Legends from 2021-22 included A Cleaner Coast organiser Kate Griffin, Rotarian Maggie Isom, LGBTIQ+ advocate Merrin Wake, Surf Coast Environmental Action Team and Winchelsea Community House manager Wendy Greaves.

People or groups nominated as Local Legends must:

  • Live, work, volunteer or go to school in Surf Coast Shire
  • Make a positive contribution to the community
  • Be willing to be nominated and give their consent
  • Agree to be featured as a Local Legend in Council’s communication channels and local media.
