Students at Cervantes Primary School got a close-up look at an unusual environmental detection team in August, meeting Megan and Kelly, a highly trained dieback detector dog from Detection for Good.
The visit gave students the opportunity to learn about Phytophthora dieback, a serious plant disease that threatens native vegetation across Western Australia, and discover how specially trained detector dogs are helping identify the disease in the field.
Kelly demonstrated her remarkable detection skills while Megan explained how detector dogs can assist land managers and environmental practitioners to locate areas affected by Phytophthora dieback.
The session was designed to introduce students to environmental biosecurity in an engaging and memorable way, while highlighting the important role that detection dogs can play in protecting Western Australia’s unique native flora.
Students from Years 5 and 6 impressed the team with their thoughtful questions and existing knowledge of dieback, while younger students enthusiastically shared stories about their own dogs at home.
Megan from Detection for Good said the visit was a fantastic opportunity to connect young people with the practical work being done to protect Western Australia’s environment.
“Not everyone thinks biosecurity is as fun as we do, but Kelly makes it really interesting – meaning that important messages that help us protect our incredible native flora and fauna are heard and understood by more people”
The event was delivered in collaboration with Detection for Good and supported through funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program.
The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to build awareness and understanding of Phytophthora dieback and environmental biosecurity within the community, including among the next generation of Western Australians.
