Hornsby Shire residents have once again been recognised as Australia’s top mobile phone recyclers, claiming MobileMuster’s Top Collector Award for a ninth consecutive year.
The annual MobileMuster awards recognise local councils that collect the most mobile phones, chargers and accessories for recycling. During the past financial year, Hornsby Shire residents recycled an impressive 677kg of mobile phone components through Council’s Community Recycling Centre at Thornleigh and other collection points across the Shire.
The result represents 15.7 per cent of all council collections across Australia and is more than double the amount collected by the next highest-performing council.
The community’s efforts diverted more than 3,300 mobile phones from landfill, preventing the equivalent of 2.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, or the environmental benefit of planting 40 trees.
Hornsby Shire Mayor Warren Waddell said the achievement reflects the community’s ongoing commitment to responsible recycling and sustainability.
“This result shows what can be achieved when a community gets behind practical environmental initiatives.
“I thank our residents for helping Hornsby Shire achieve this milestone, and I encourage everyone to keep recycling their old mobile phones so we can make it 10 consecutive years at the top.”
MobileMuster is the telecommunications industry’s mobile phone recycling program, recovering more than 95 per cent of materials from old phones and accessories through recycling. Recovered materials can be used in the manufacture of new products, reducing the need for virgin resources including aluminium, copper, gold, silver, cobalt and lithium.
MobileMuster’s Head of Sustainability and Social Impact, Helen Maisano, said: “Hornsby Shire has plenty to be proud of, from Brooklyn and Berowra to Hornsby and Cherrybrook, and now residents can add e-waste recycling to that list. Recycling 677.34kg in the past financial year and achieving an incredible 3,557.97kg across the last five years puts Hornsby firmly at the top of the national leaderboard.
“Congratulations to Hornsby Shire Council and its residents on such a fantastic community effort. Many of us still have old phones sitting in drawers ‘just in case’, so taking a few minutes to clear them out is a simple way to make sure they are recycled and put to good use, while helping Hornsby continue its fantastic recycling efforts.”
