Walking and cycling across Spring Creek, Torquay, is now easier with the installation of a new pedestrian bridge near the Spring Valley playground and bike park.
The new bridge replaces the informal ‘pallet bridge’ crossing, providing a safe and accessible connection for people of all ages and abilities.
Councillor Liz Pattison said this new bridge connects accessible walking and cycling paths through Torquay.
“I know so many locals have been waiting for this. This crossing is used every day by people using the trails, getting to school, visiting the bike park and playground, so the new pedestrian bridge will make a difference for a lot of people.”
“It provides a safe and reliable crossing that everyone can use, whether they are walking, riding, pushing a pram or using a mobility aid,” she said.
“The previous makeshift pallet bridge was well used by the community, but it wasn’t always the easiest crossing, with muddy conditions in winter and a few extra things to be mindful of during summer, including snakes. Replacing it with an accessible bridge improves safety so people can enjoy this popular part of Torquay.”
Removing the pallets will allow the creek to re-establish its natural flow, reduce erosion and limit impacts on the creek banks.
Cr Pattison said the environmental benefits were just as important as the improved community connection.
“Restoring the creek’s natural flow will help protect the surrounding environment and improve the long-term health of Spring Creek,” she said.
“Once the creek has had time to re-establish its natural flow, further revegetation works will be undertaken.”
Minor works will continue around the bridge, with the bridge expected to be open to pedestrians by the end of the week.
