The collaboration supports Hyperion’s broader approach to resource-efficient manufacturing, including its use of validated recycled polymer feedstocks.
Schneider Electric, a global energy technology leader, has partnered with advanced manufacturing company Hyperion Systems to support on-demand manufacturing for mining and critical resources operations.
The partnership will see Hyperion Systems integrate Schneider Electric’s industrial automation and control technologies into its containerised TitanCell platform, which uses large-format 3D printing to produce industrial components, replacement parts and maintenance tooling closer to where they are needed.
Designed for deployment across a range of industrial environments, TitanCell offers a localised manufacturing solution for industries including mining and critical resources, defense, marine and construction.
For industries such as mining, where operations are often located in remote areas, sourcing replacement parts can involve lengthy procurement lead times, complex freight logistics and additional costs. Hyperion Systems’ approach offers an alternative by bringing manufacturing capability closer to operational sites, reducing reliance on distant suppliers and enabling suitable components and tooling to be produced locally.
Schneider Electric will provide the industrial automation and control technologies that Hyperion integrates into its TitanCell equipment. These technologies support the control and monitoring of manufacturing processes, while providing a foundation for integrating automation across future manufacturing systems.
Darren Butler, Vice President Industrial Automation at Schneider Electric, said:
“Hyperion has taken a practical approach to a challenge facing Australian industry: how to access critical parts and manufacturing capability when traditional supply chains are difficult to reach.
“Our role is to provide the industrial automation and control technologies that sit at the heart of TitanCell. By integrating our controllers, sensors and automation solutions into the equipment, we’re helping Hyperion control, monitor and manage its manufacturing processes.
“This is a practical example of how industrial automation can support new approaches to manufacturing, combining innovative equipment with the control capabilities needed to bring production closer to Australian industrial operations.”
Automation supporting deployable manufacturing
Hyperion’s TitanCell brings robotic printing, material feeding, extrusion and supporting equipment together within a containerised manufacturing system designed for deployment closer to industrial operations.
Schneider Electric’s industrial automation technologies will support the coordination and control of these manufacturing processes, providing Hyperion with a consistent control foundation as it develops and deploys its equipment.
Connected controls can also provide operational information to support equipment monitoring and fault diagnosis, particularly where manufacturing cells are deployed in locations with limited access to specialist technical support.
Joshua Wigley, Founder and CEO of Hyperion Systems, said: “TitanCell is designed to bring manufacturing capability closer to the operations that need it, giving industries a practical way to produce suitable parts and components locally, particularly in remote locations.
“As we expand our manufacturing capabilities, we need automation technologies that can be integrated into the equipment we develop. Working with Schneider Electric gives us the industrial control capabilities needed to operate and monitor our manufacturing systems, allowing us to focus on delivering deployable manufacturing solutions that meet the needs of Australian industry.”
Supporting more resource-efficient manufacturing
Alongside its deployable manufacturing capabilities, Hyperion Systems is developing circular manufacturing processes using selected recycled polymer materials.
The company recovers, compounds and validates suitable materials for use as manufacturing feedstocks, providing a pathway for recoverable polymers to be returned to industrial use.
Combined with the integration of industrial automation controls, Hyperion’s approach brings together controlled manufacturing processes and more resource-efficient material options to support the development of localised industrial production.
